The Great Stupa of Boudhnath is said to have been built at the time of the previous buddha, Mahakashapa, by a poultry woman and her four sons. Upon completion of the stupa, they made profound aspirations to work for the establishment of the Buddhist teaching in Tibet in their future lives. For this reason the Great Stupa is particularly sacred to the followers of Tibetan Buddhism. Following a prediction of Guru Padmasambhava, revealed by the 19th century tertön Chogyur Dechen Lingpa, that a monastery should be built at this location, His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche built the Shechen Monastery, following the tradition of the Shechen Monastery in Eastern Tibet. The monastery houses several large temples, a college, a library, an art school, the Shechen Charitable Clinic, and the Shechen Guest House.
